Shivam means mindfulness in Sanskrit; this space is about trying to lead a mindful life and the elements that go with it: yoga, healthy living, nature, and the creative forces within each of us.

Taking a Real Walk

Shivangi Parikh

Isn't taking a walk after the rains just the best thing ever!! I simply love how everything looks so vibrant, and how the earth smells so sweet! And today I was forced to notice even the tiniest of details during my walk. You see my phone died right after I took this picture. And I felt so betrayed by it right as I was about to plug in to some music, and take some pictures of the scene around. I felt such disappointment that I had no choice but to actually just WALK. I mean, when was the last time any of us did just that!

But I had to today, and boy, what a great feeling it was! At the risk of sounding like a corny poet, I will say that I actually counted at least 5 shades of green, heard 3 different sounds of birds cooing and tweeting (the real one), even felt the light drizzle on my forehead....and here was the best I walked along taking this sensory experience in, I heard my breath moving along in an even rhythm. Have you ever tried that? It is the most calming beat you can walk to. Ever. None of the other things bothered me anymore, once my attention was on my breath.

At the end of my walk, I realized how often do we really soak in what is going on? I would like to say that I do, but apart from the 10 seconds I spend taking in the view, I really don't. Invariably we put on our headphones to block the sound out, or we look into our phones as we block the sights out. And I don't expect to change that for anyone, neither for you nor me. But I would like to suggest that once in a while, do simply that - WALK, without any distractions, even if it is just for 5 minutes! Enjoy what is out there, see the colors, listen to the birds, and maybe you can eventually hear your breath. All your thoughts will quiet down miraculously, as you focus on that beat. It is truly the best kind of music to your ears.

Have a great weekend :)
