Step 1: You start by buying a pattern of the easiest bag you can make, especially if your sewing skills are basic (like mine!). You lay down the pattern and the instructions out in front of you and attempt to jog your middle school memory as you stare at the lines and triangles in front of you.
Step 2: Once you figure out you are not good at reading diagrams, or following instructions, you bring the best bag you can find in your house, turn it inside out and replicate that pattern in your head. Draw your version of the bag now in your sketchbook with your expert guess on measurements.
Start cutting your pieces and take a break to click a cool pic that you post on your Instagram
Sew the easiest part of the bag first, the pocket. If it turns out right, feel good about your skills and get motivated to make the straps next.
Between making progress on sewing, and taking cool pics of your project, you sew the lining on the wrong side, so you need to take out the seams. NOTE: Removing seams is a very IMPORTANT skill that you must possess!
Unfazed, you march on ahead and finish your bag, followed by an ecstatic scream of joy. You put your items in the bag and show off by taking photos (again).
You realize the error in the bag..the straps should not be going across the bag....see even you cannot spot the mistake! The bag looks flawless ;)
Last Step: You return the fancy patterns you bought at the fabric store, and head to the nearest bar for a well-deserved drink :)
Happy Labor Day Weekend folks!
